Why it made the list
This is the Allagash Cruiser in a smaller size: the same pattern, steel and hickory, out of the same shop in Maine. I see it as the one for somebody packing in to hunt who doesn't need a full-size axe.

What it's for
The Dirigo Belt Axe is the little brother of the Allagash Cruiser. It's the same Maine wedge pattern, the same U.S. tool steel and hickory, forged the same way in South Portland, Maine. It's just smaller: a 1 3/4 lb head on a 17" handle.
It's the size that rides in a pack and still splits kindling at camp, by the fire pit or at the wood stove. It comes with a leather sheath made in Maine.

Owning it

Looking after it

Wipe it dry after use and give the blade a thin coat of oil now and then. Carbon steel darkens with use. That gray patina is normal, and it helps protect the blade.
